CNY magician offers free gift to each guest of Special Kids Day

Throughout John Wolfson’s life magic and community service have gone hand in hand. On missions trips abroad and across Upstate New York, he’s combined his love of magic with his passion for helping others.

Wolfson will continue that marriage of magic and service this week during a dozen performances at the Broome County Fair in Whitney Point.

Throughout the week, Wolfson will be raising money and awareness for the fair’s Special Kids Day, which is set for Thursday July, 27. Every special child who attends will receive a free gift from Wolfson. He is also donating half of profits from all after show sales of magic sets and souvenirs to the Broome County Fair Special Kids Fund.

"I was immediately interested in making Special Kids Day a focus of my time with the Broome County Fair,” Wolfson said. “These are children who might otherwise not get to experience hands-on agriculture or the fun of a midway. I’m excited to be part of effort."

Wolfson, also known as Magical John, became fascinated with magic as a child. At six years old he commandeered his older sister’s magic kit and began learning. It wasn’t long before he was performing wherever he could find an audience. In 2003, he joined the International Brotherhood of Magicians, the world’s largest magic organization. He also attended the McBride Magic and Mystery School in Las Vegas, studying under renowned magicians Jeff McBride, Eugene Burger,Lance Burton and Mac King. His talents and service interests have taken him across New York state and to Israel, Peru, Canada, the Dominican Republic, and China.

During five days at the fair, “Magical John Wolfson” will be performing his award-winning magic show twice a day. Fairgoers can also catch up with him throughout the fair stilt-walking, juggling, and performing balloon art.

Special Kids Day is over 35 years old and welcomes thousands of children and adults from Broome, Tioga, Cortland, Tompkins, and Chenango Counties who come from local camps, institutions, schools, and group homes. Participants are treated to free admission, amusement rides, an All-American Lunch, a treat of cotton candy or a snow cone, and even a prize to take home.

ROCHESTER MAGICIAN PARTICIPATES IN GIANT BALLOON INSTALLATION "Magical John" Wolfson helps build Airigami Balloon Adventure in Rochester, NY
Crew of 70 uses 40,000 balloons for five-story Journey on the Genesee   Rochester, NY – John Wolfson, aka Magical John is one of 60 artists and volunteers from all over the U.S. and from as far away as the Netherlands who will build a massive balloon art installation in Rochester, NY this January. Airigami Balloon Adventure: Journey on the Genesee is produced by Rochester’s Larry Moss and Kelly Cheatle of AirigamiTM (“the fine art of folding air”), who are world-renowned for their incredible, full-blown installations. The five-story, 50-foot sculpture will be constructed from more than 40,000 compostable balloons over four days (January 25-28), and on display from January 29-February 7 in Rochester’s historic, downtown Sibley Building (250 E. Main St., 14604). This will be Airigami’s seventh such giant Rochester art installation (formerly titled Balloon Manor); 2015’s Amazing Air-filled Undersea Adventure drew more than 30,000 visitors.

“Working with this amazing team is a one-of-a-kind experience” says Wolfson, who is a full time family entertainer (he dazzles audiences at birthdays, school shows, festivals, and private events.) “Larry and Kelly are amazing teachers, and it is so special to be part of this incredible project!"

Wolfson is the latest entertainer to perform "How to Catch a Mouse- simple machines at work" a fun and educational school show written and produced by Larry Moss that teaches the nature and structure of simple machines .

Both the build and the finished installation will be on display to the public free of charge through Sunday, February 7 (9:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. daily), when the installation will be deflated during its traditional Popping Party (tickets available at airigamiadventure.com/tickets).

“We are incredibly excited to recreate nature with balloons – the river, waterfalls, animals, plants – inside, in the middle of winter,” says Airigami Artistic Director and Founder Larry Moss. “And we're doing it all in an environmentally sound way, generating almost no waste, and composting the remains.”

This year’s presenting partners, the Seneca Park Zoo Society and the YMCA of Greater Rochester, are both keen to reach the community regarding important education programs: My Genesee, the Zoo Society’s effort to explore the biodiversity of the Genesee River and promote its sustainability; and the Y’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) curriculum. Airigami is offering its own community learning experiences this year as well: Airigami Balloon Adventure Crew Experience(youth-adult), Group Talk & Twist (kindergarten & up), and Experiment! Balloon Breakdown (ages 8 & up).

Adventure visitors will also be treated to free, live entertainment by artists including Rochester storyteller Jay Stetzer, Magical John, Flower City Vaudeville, and groups from Spectrum Creative Arts. Information about community classes and an evolving entertainment schedule are available at airigamiadventure.com, where parking information is also located.   Journey on the Genesee is sponsored by the Seneca Park Zoo Society, the YMCA of Greater Rochester, Qualatex Balloons, Hilton Garden Inn Rochester Downtown, the City of Rochester, Visit Rochester, The Sibley Building and WinnCompanies, 13 WHAM, Kids Out and About.com, City Newspaper, Immaginé, Spectrum Creative Arts, and more. Sponsorship opportunities are still available; please visit airigamiadventure.com/sponsors.   More about Airigami: Rochester artists and Airigami partners Larry Moss and Kelly Cheatle are world renowned for their incredible full-blown installations, whether it’s a giant Acrocanthosaurus for the Virginia Museum of Natural History, the world’s first piloted balloon sculpture (Fantastic Flying Octopus), or one of their many Balloon Manors. Airigami has earned two Guinness World’s Records, along with AP, CNN Headline, PBS and other international and national news coverage. They’ve also made multiple appearances on The Martha Stewart Show, Good Morning America, the Today show, and at the White House.    Media please note:  High-resolution images and other media assets for Airigami Balloon Adventure are available at airigamiadventure.com/press, and interviews and photo/footage opportunities can be arranged.

Magical John's Big Top Stage to Headline Field of Horrors

8/31/2015

Picture
Brunswick, NY- Magic, music and mayhem will be at the center ring of this year’s Field of Horrors halloween attraction at Capital Combat Zone.

This year’s entertainment has been ramped up to include Magical John’s three feature shows: Family Fun Comedy Magic, Stunt and Danger Variety Spectacular, and Guts, Gore, & Ghost Stories along-side Dark Hollow Road Fire Performers

Magical John of Rochester NY will be performing his three unique shows to appeal to every age group. His Family Fun Comedy Magic Show will bring the audience right on stage to help perform the magic. The Stunt and Danger Variety Spectacular is a perfect example of what you should not try at home with bullwhip tricks, knife juggling, and a death-defying escape that will have you holding your breathe. Guts, Gore and Ghost Stories is not for the weak of stomach or faint of heart. Combining classic seance and spook show techniques with special effects and illusions of dismemberment straight out of a horror movie, you’ll be covering your eyes but peeking through your fingers to see what happens next.

For “Magical John” Wolfson, the show began In 1995 at the age of six, when he commandeered his older sister’s magic kit and began learning. It wasn’t long before he was performing wherever he could find an audience. John continued to study the art of magic under local professionals and amateurs. In 2010 he attended the McBride Magic and Mystery School in Las Vegas, studying under renowned magicians Jeff McBride, Eugene Burger, Lance Burton and Mac King.  “I have the greatest job I could ever want. I get to bring smiles and laughter to people everywhere I go” Said Wolfson.

Having commanded hundreds of audiences across New York State and in 6 countries, in 2011 Magical John was elected the youngest president of the Syracuse chapter of the International Brotherhood of Magicians.

The entertainment isn’t all that’s new this year. The event organizers have doubled the number of haunted houses in addition to their haunted hayride. “It’s not your typical hayride, either,” Owner David Mulinio said. “We’ve had friends say it’s an experience.” Last year’s event drew 12,000 guests over 5 weekends. This year with the expanded attractions, entertainment, and vendors, the event hopes to have up to 20,000 people coming to be spooked and bemused over 6 weekends.

Empire State Craft Fair First Event for new Erie Canal Village

5/20/2015

Picture
The Empire State Craft Fair opens on Saturday, May 23rd, at Erie Canal Village and runs through the three days of this coming Memorial Day Weekend. Hosting over 100 regional vendors, the Village will be open to the public for free. Visitors will find thousands of unique, one-of-a-kind items including jewelry, knitted clothing and accessories, hand made soaps, and even swords. Additionally, face painting by Mrs. Magical and balloon art by Magical John. Local services groups will also be there with their community outreach programs.

Beginning at 10:00 AM on Saturday morning, and open until 6:00 PM, guests can enjoy free entertainment including the Magical John Show in the Tavern Green or tour environmental areas that are staged to provide a glimpse of life as it was in earlier times. The Coppertree SCA group will demonstrate period arts from the Renaissance, complete with battle scenes provided by the Knights of the Fiat Lux in full armor. The 157th New York Volunteers will show camp life as it was during the Civil War. You can even stop by and chat with Queen Victoria and, if she feels amused, you can pose for a "selfie" with her.

"The Empire State Craft Fair is all about fun, as well as crafts" said Danielle Gorton-Williams, speaking on behalf of the new management team at Erie Canal Village. She expressed the hope that everyone who cares about the history and traditions of this area will come out to see the progress that's being made at the Village. "We're proud to be able to display these crafts in an historic setting like The Village", she said.

The public will be able to see the progress that's already being made in the restoration of the Village. A few of the buildings will be open to the public including the Canal Museum, the old McConnellsville Depot, and the Cheese Museum. Even the gardens are starting to come back. Landscapers have been clearing away years of overgrowth that have obscured views of the Village.

Fences and gates that used to keep people out of the Village are now gone. Entry and parking are now free and everyone is invited to attend the Fair. “Come by and see what we have been able to accomplish in just three weeks”, invited Timothy Shannon, who’s management team took over the Village on May 1st. The Village is located at 5789 Rome-New London Road, at Routes 46 and 49 in Rome, New York.

For further information, contact Danielle Gorton-Williams, Creative Director, at (315) 281-8181.
